SSCA members and guests enjoyed a musical celebration of the Year of the Ox with Haikou, China on Feb. 23rd via Zoom. In addition to hearing the history of our relationship with Haikou and more about the city, guests were treated to a special program, a collaboration with the Musical Instrument Museum, where their Asian curator, Dr. Eddie Zhu, explained Chinese Sizhu instruments.
He played Sizhu music that is typically performed during Chinese New Year. Sizhu is a chamber music tradition commonly performed for gatherings and their own recreation. The sounds of fiddles, lutes, zithers, bamboo flutes, and percussion illustrate a vivid tradition while extending a happy greeting to the new year.
